The Joint Association of Port Transport Unions (JAPTU) has called off its planned sit-down strike scheduled from Tuesday,14th April to Friday,17th April, 2026, following a high-level meeting with the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA).
The meeting, held at the Ghana Shippers’ House in Accra on Monday, 13th April, 2026, brought together the leadership of JAPTU and management of the GSA led by the Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Ransford Gyampo to address concerns raised by the Union.
JAPTU had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over a proposed registration exercise for haulage vehicles and drivers, amid claims that individual drivers would be required to pay a fee of GH¢250.
However, during the discussions, the GSA clarified that the registration fee is to be borne by haulage companies, not individual drivers.
Following the meeting, JAPTU leadership expressed satisfaction with the clarification and subsequently announced the suspension of the planned industrial action.
The Union also indicated its intention to brief its members on the outcome of the engagement.
The Executive Secretary of JAPTU, Musa Ibrahim, told the media: “We are satisfied with the clarification and wish to thank the Ghana Shippers’ Authority for this amicable resolution through dialogue.”
The Head of Freight and Logistics at the GSA, Mr Fred Asiedu-Dartey, noted that, in line with the Authority’s mandate to regulate shippers and shipping service providers, the registration exercise is essential to establish a comprehensive database to support efficient operations.
In addition to the registration issue, JAPTU raised concerns involving the Ghana Highway Authority and the Ministry of Roads and Highways Ghana, particularly in relation to the implementation of the ECOWAS Harmonised Registration and Axle Load Control System.
Prof. Gyampo assured the Union that these concerns would be communicated to the appropriate institutions to facilitate an amicable resolution.
