The axle load station at the Aflao border will begin operations on 3rd June this year to weigh trucks carrying goods between Ghana and Togo to ensure that trucks do not carry goods beyond the allowable load limit on Ghana’s transit corridor.
A representative of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) announced this at the second quarter meeting of the Greater Accra Transit Shipper Committee on 22nd May, 2019.
The Committee members expressed concerns of transit shippers regarding the operations of some axle load stations and implored the GHA to address them.
Representatives of the Meridian Port Services (MPS) also did a presentation to the Committee members on the facilities at their new container terminal which is expected to begin operations on 28th June.
The meeting, among others, also discussed VAT on transit goods and the standard operating procedures for the transit process flow.
The Transit Shipper Committee was established by the Ghana Shippers’ Authority to address challenges faced by shippers along Ghana’s transit corridor and also deepen Ghana’s trading relationship with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
The Committee draws its membership from organisations such the GHA, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Burkina Shippers’ Council, Mali Shippers’ Council, Niger Shippers’ Council, Ministries of Trade and Industry, Transport, Roads and Highways, state agencies whose activities affect trade facilitation, associations of truck drivers and other private stakeholders in the maritime and transport industry.
