Members of the Upper East Regional Shipper Committee have been sensitized on some emerging fraudulent activities in the shipping and logistics industry with specific focus on online payment modalities. The move is as a result of the growing reports of online fraud cases affecting importers and exporters.
At a committee meeting held in Bolgatanga on 17th May, 2022 the Second in Command (2IC) of the Customs Division at Paga, Mr Daddey Danso took the shippers through best practices in making payments using the various online platforms, how to detect and avoid making payments to fraudsters among others.
Most of the talking points were centered on issues relating to Bill of Laden, incidence of cargo theft, change of bank details and a general lack of transparency in doing business in the industry.
In order to avoid falling victim to fraud in their line of work, shippers were advised to ensure they understand the role of a freight forwarder and what functions they are required to undertake, Understand the mode of transport their goods require, know their trading terms, and select a genuine freight forwarding company.
The Shippers expressed satisfaction describing the meeting as relevant and timely, as majority of all financial transactions are being done online in accordance with government’s digitalization drive for a cashless society.
Some of the shippers who have been victims of online fraud commended the GSA for the initiative as it would ensure they do not lose money to unscrupulous persons in future transactions.
