The Chief Justice of the Republic, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia A. B. Akuffo, has commended the Ghana Shippers’ Authority’s (GSA) commitment to maritime law education for judges of the Superior Courts of Ghana.
She also appealed to the GSA to expand the scope of maritime law education to cover members of the Ghana Bar Association.

“This is particularly reinforced by the fact that lawyers are officers of the courts and therefore building their capacity in this discipline will go a long way to improve the justice delivery system.”, she emphasised.
The Chief Justice gave the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 12th Maritime Law Seminar organised by the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) with support from the GSA on 11th October, 2019 in Accra.
For her part, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ms Gloria Akuffo said the advent of the Paperless Port project, increase in cargo due to micro and macro -economic policies and other maritime reforms and activities bring in their wake many socio-economic challenges associated with their positive impacts.

She reiterated “the need for a vibrant, credible, effective and efficient judiciary that can deal with the complex disputes that may emerge as a result of these ever-increasing maritime activities.”
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Ms Benonita Bismarck assured the justices of the Authority’s continued commitment and support towards the organisation of the maritime law seminar.
The maritime law seminar provides a platform to update the knowledge base of the Justices of the Superior Courts of Ghana to adequately prepare them for the challenges of interpretation and application of both domestic and international law on maritime issues.
